This estate is one of the grandest and largest estates on Long Island's Gold Coast. Built in 1925 by Marshall Field III, heir to the great department store fortune, it is located in the town of Lloyd Neck. It overlooks Long Island Sound and is surrounded by 1,750 acres of spacious woodlands and open meadows. Field named his estateCaumsett, after the original Native American name for the property. Caumsett means "place by a sharp rock." There is a main house, several outbuildings, an impressive stable for horses, many guest cottages and an indoor tennis stadium. The main house opens into a great central hall and leads to many large rooms including the library and living room, the dining room and a large outside portico.
Today the grounds of this fabulous mansion are used to educate young students about the environment and natural history of Long Island. Caumsett State Park is run by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
