At 140 feet tall, the Fire Island Lighthouse is the tallest on Long Island. It was built in 1858 to serve as the first landfall for those crossing the Atlantic bound for New York. The Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society began an effort to restore it in 1982 as a result of the U.S. Coast Guard abandoning it because of poor conditions nine years earlier.
